Dear Brothers and Sisters,
A hundred fathers of fathers and mothers of mothers came before. How many of us can do this, count back 10 generations, 30 generations….more?
A 100th generation son.
A 100th generation daughter.
Do you know them? African Jews, personally, today or yesterday? Did your parents? How about your grandmother (Bubbeh, Savta, Jiddah) or grandfather (Zaydeh, Saba, Jadd)? Ask them, they will tell you stories.
The North African Jews lived with their neighbors, tribesmen, and fellow countrymen for 2,500 years. Or more. That makes each son a 100th generation son and each daughter a 100th generation daughter living in these ancient lands.
They are the ancient lands, here and in Israel. From the Babylonian exile and before they witnessed, enriched and lived lives. The lands became countries, then countries fell and rose, came and went with new identities. In relatively recently times the lands are spoken of as ‘Arabized’, as if earlier histories and people never existed.
Think about that length of time.
Its a pleasure to know them. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, I will paint the soul portraits of the men, women and children from Morroco, Algeria, Egypt… Their lives were abruptly changed. Many who know the story hold a finger to their lips and blow a whispered shhh. Nevertheless, no matter, the souls are talking to us. Something is happening.
