Brothers and Sisters,
Family is family. Ishmael had a daughter, Mahalath, who married our patriarch, Jacobs twin brother Esau. Ishmael back then, the Arab father, was simply Esau’s uncle, nothing more and nothing less.
Ol’ Uncle Ishie was part of the family who Esau went to for a bride. The name of Ishmael’s only daughter according to the Talmudist writer Rashi comes from the root word for forgiveness. Her womanly compassion was to help a restive, womanizer, hunter return (baal teshuva) to his brother, his people and the ways of righteousness. Our sages say women will lead our return to see the godliness in every human being.
Esau it appears would stand back from his wickedness and ask himself about his devoted, soul-mate wife: “what do you see in me?”.
When she looked at him she saw his soul screaming to return. Does this sound familiar?
We can help heal each other.
Feeling better,
Daniel
